Paris
Gateway to Arkansas' Highest Peak
The small town of Paris provides easy access to some of the state’s most dramatic views atop Mount Magazine while offering its own downtown charm.
At the base of Arkansas’ tallest mountain, Paris complements outdoor recreation opportunities with abbeys and arcades, coal mining history and a 25-foot Eiffel Tower painted with authentic Parisian paint.
Like Paris, France, the small town leans into love and romance. A 25-foot Eiffel Tower with a two-tiered fountain anchors the west side of the square, painted with the exact formula used on the original in France. Couples pledge their love to each other by adding locks to the adjacent Love Lock Fence and tossing the key into the fountain.
Downtown Paris’ historic square features antique shops and stores. If you’re a shoe lover, don’t miss shopping at Warren's Shoes, the flagship store of a regional chain that started here. Warren’s carries designer brands from Sam Edelman to UGG, and premium handbags from HOBO to Big Buddha. Check the sale rack for great deals.
Another must-stop shop is Stirling Soap Company, known for its handmade natural soaps and classic grooming essentials. From richly scented bath bars and shave soaps to aftershave splashes, starter kits and even small-batch coffee, it’s a fun place to stock up on everyday favorites or discover seasonal scents that make great gifts.
For family fun, head to Daddio's Pinball Arcade for unlimited play on 13 machines for $5 daily admission.
The area’s coal mining and pioneer past is preserved at the Logan County Museum, housed in the county’s historic jail building. A Coal Miners Memorial honors the 3,000 miners who worked these hills between 1880 and 1955.
Five miles east of Paris, Subiaco Abbey welcomes visitors to explore its historic architecture, manicured courtyards and peaceful grounds. The working Benedictine monastery offers retreat facilities for those seeking reflection.
Outdoor Recreation
Paris is a great starting point for Mount Magazine adventures. Load up with supplies for picnics or cabin stays before heading up the mountain.
Just 19 miles from the town square, Mount Magazine State Park draws visitors to Arkansas' highest point of 2,753 feet. The park has 14 miles of hiking trails and adventure sports from rock climbing to hang gliding. Park lodging includes primitive campsites, RV hookups, 13 cabins and a 60-room lodge with a restaurant, indoor pool and conference center.
Nearby Cove Lake Recreation Area features swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, camping and even miniature golf. Rent canoes and kayaks to fish for catfish and largemouth bass.
Equestrians can trailer to Sorghum Hollow Horse Camp, the official trailhead for the 37-mile Huckleberry Mountain Horse Trail that winds through the Ozark National Forest. Shoal Bay and Paris City Lake offer the quieter spots where locals fish and camp.
