Ponca

Buffalo National River Country

Ponca lies within the untamed beauty of the upper Buffalo National River, where towering bluffs and pristine waters create one of America's true wild places.

Ponca calls to those seeking genuine solitude. Paddlers navigating emerald waters, hikers chasing waterfalls and stargazers searching for cosmic views of the Milky Way far from city lights.

Fall Into Favor

This tiny mountain community sits at the heart of the Buffalo National River's most dramatic scenery. Here, the river cuts through ancient limestone, creating soaring cliffs and hidden hollows that have drawn adventurers for generations. The surrounding wilderness holds some of mid-America's most spectacular natural features, including Hemmed-In Hollow Falls, which plunges nearly 210 feet and is the tallest waterfall between the Appalachians and Rockies.

Call Your Bluff

The trails around Ponca hold legendary status among hikers. Whitaker Point Trail leads to a dramatic rock outcrop jutting over the valley. It is perhaps the most photographed spot in the Ozarks. Lost Valley Trail winds through a narrow canyon to Eden Falls, a 53-foot cascade of water. Venture further up the bluff line to the mouth of a 200-foot cave and crawl inside to find a 25-foot waterfall. (Bring a headlamp or flashlight.) Nearby are trailheads for Sweden Creek Falls and Smith Creek Preserve, as well as longer routes like the Upper Buffalo Wilderness. These paths stay hikeable year-round, with each season bringing its own rewards.

Elk roam the valleys around Ponca. Early morning and evening drives along the river corridor often yield sightings of these majestic animals grazing in fields. Fall brings the haunting sound of bugling bulls competing for dominance. Stop by the Ponca Nature Center to learn more about the elk herds.

Backcountry flying just to see the view or landing at the grass airstrip at Buffalo Outdoor Center for a floating or hiking adventure is popular here, too.

Rock climbing is phenomenal at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, known for its five-day rock climbing festival, 24 Hours of Horseshoe Hell, held on the last full weekend of September.

Get the Drift

During spring, the upper Buffalo flows at its finest for floating. Local outfitters offer canoe, kayak, tube and raft rentals, along with shuttle services, so you can focus on the jaw-dropping scenery rather than logistics. The Upper Buffalo from Boxley to Carver has five concessioners approved by the National Park Service.

Find Your Getaway

Remote cabin rentals perched on the mountainsides above Ponca offer front-row seats to nature's daily spectacle. Dark skies reveal the Milky Way in stunning detail, while sunrise paints the bluffs in shades of gold and pink. Autumn transforms the canopy into a tapestry of scarlet and amber, making scenic drives along the winding mountain roads as rewarding as any hike.

Despite its remote location, or perhaps because of it, Ponca has cultivated a small but dedicated community of outfitters, artists, and wilderness advocates who help visitors connect with this remarkable landscape. Whether you're planning a multi-day backpacking expedition, floating the river or simply need a quiet place to disconnect, Ponca is an ideal escape into Arkansas' wildest terrain.
